Jose Henrique Fonseca's Heleno (Brazil, 2011) - Soccer is a national obsession in Brazil, fuelled by
idols like Pelé, Garrincha and Zico. But before them all came Heleno de
Freitas. Director José Henrique Fonseca gives a fragmented account of the rise
and fall of this hot-tempered athlete, from his heyday playing for his beloved
Botafogo in the forties to his tragic death in 1959 in a sanatorium due to
untreated syphilis. In his time, Heleno played for Fluminense, Vasco de Gama
and Junior de Barranquilla before being sold to Boca Juniors of Argentina in
1950. Despite his undisputed talent on the pitch, Fonseca has chosen to leave
aside the strictly professional aspect of his life and focus on the man behind
the heavenly physique. Ultimately, we are left with the bitter taste of a life
plagued by mistakes; a man fallen victim to his own fame. Rodrigo Santoro’s
stellar performance as Heleno won him best actor at Havana, while Angie Cepeda

Sebastian Cordero's Fisherman (Ecuadoe, 2012) - In 2007, Juan Fernando Andrade published “CONFESSIONS OF A
COCAINE FISHERMAN”, based on a story about a group of fishermen who discover a
shipment of cocaine on the beach. Andrade worked with Sebastián Cordero on an
adaptation of his novel to incorporate the doubts that habitually torment the
director’s characters. Blanquito, one of the fishermen, decides not to risk
selling the drugs in El Matal, the town in the Colombian province of Manabí
where he is from. Instead, he teams up with Lorna, who needs the money to get
back to her native Colombia and find her daughter. From here on in, Pescador
adopts the format of a road movie that takes us to Guayaquil and Quito, past
geographies that merge with the physical and spiritual landscapes of the
characters and that leave Blanquito standing at a crossroads, faced with his
“loss of innocence”. Colombia’s María Cecilia Sánchez gives an imposing

Melo Guevara's Field of Amapolas (Colombia, 2012) - Emilio and his nine-year-old son are forced to abandon
their parcel of land overnight due to threats that they and the locals have
been collaborating with the enemy in the guerilla war that has been ravaging
rural Colombia for years. A relative helps them relocate and, despite his
initial reticence, Emilio ends up working on a poppy plantation. At the heart
of the story is Luisa, with whom Emilio’s son shares the secret companionship
of a neighborhood dog. Filmed in the south of Colombia, near Melo Guevara’s
native Ipiales, this is a film about the plight of innocent civilians displaced
by war. Sitting on the fence is not an option and it is almost impossible for
them not to get mixed up in illegal activities. “You don’t have to be old to
die here,” says one of the characters in a dialogue that reveals the
omnipresence of death. Given the storyline, we can hardly expect a happy
ending, yet the final flashback of the children leaves us with an inkling of

180 Seconds

Alexander Giraldo's 180 Seconds Columbia, 2012) - Zico and his sister, Angie, are the ringleaders of a group
of armed robbers the police have been keeping tabs on. Now they are planning
what they hope will be their last heist on a money exchange bureau, the one
that will finance their dream trip to Europe. But they have only 180 seconds to
get in and out before the alarm sounds. Guájaro and Rincón, who comes at the
recommendation of a convict friend of Zico’s, are also part of the operation.
Yet we know from the opening shots of Zico and his sister’s bloody corpses that
something has gone terribly wrong. Columbian director Alexander Giraldo has
opted for a narrative method reminiscent of Stanley Kubrick or Quentin
Tarantino, forcing us to piece the story together from random fragments. And
while this approach may not be entirely original, he executes it extremely
effectively, complete with memorable dialogues and outstanding performances.

Hit and Run

| David Palmer's Hit and Run (US, 2012) - Comic actor Dax Shepard isn't the kind of guy who comes to mind when
trying to cast a Hollywood action movie. After putting himself in the
driver's seat with "Hit & Run," however, the goofy-acting "Punk'd"
host merits future consideration. An unexpectedly satisfying date-movie
spin about a redneck lothario (Shepard) who confronts old demons in
order to drive his booksmart g.f. (Kristen Bell) to a big-city job
interview, this low-budget B movie looks poised to surprise, potentially
rivaling the success Open Road Films enjoyed with "The Grey" earlier
this year. |
