The Wolverine

James Mangold's The Wolverine (US, 2013) RATING: 3  - The Marvel team has recast the Incredible Hulk three times in recent years, but when it comes to their most popular hothead, Wolverine, there’s only one actor fit to wear the claws: Hugh Jackman returns for his sixth screen appearance as the adamantium-reinforced superhero in James Mangold’s smart, Japan-set “The Wolverine,” an entertaining and surprisingly existential digression from his usual X-Men exploits. Though Wolvie comes across a bit world-weary and battle-worn by now, Jackman is in top form, taking the opportunity to test the character’s physical and emotional extremes. Fans might’ve preferred bigger action or more effects, but Mangold does them one better, recovering the soul of a character whose immortality left something to be desired.

Snowpiercer

Bong Joon Ho's Snowpiercer (South Korea, 2013) - Two decades into a second Ice Age, a few thousand human survivors live out their days aboard a state-of-the-art luxury train in “Snowpiercer,” an enormously ambitious, visually stunning and richly satisfying futuristic epic from the gifted Korean genre director Bong Joon-ho (“The Host,” “Memories of Murder”). A rare high-end sci-fi/fantasy pic made completely outside the studio system, and that even rarer case of an acclaimed foreign helmer working in English with no appreciable loss of his distinctive visual and storytelling style, Bong’s adaptation of French graphic novel “Le Transperceneige” reps a pricey investment ($40 million) for majority producer CJ Entertainment, but seems a downright bargain compared with the cost of forging such pics on Hollywood turf. A heavy marketing blitz combined with Bong and co-star Song Kang-ho’s considerable fan bases will drive strong biz at home (where the pic opens Aug. 1), if less than the whopping $64 million earned by “The Host” in 2006 — until recently, Korea’s all-time box office champ.

R.I.P.D

Robert Schwenke's R.I.P.D (US, 2013) - Transforming the supernatural into the subpar, R.I.P.D. aspires to the hip, zippy, irreverent spirit of Men In Black, but this effects-heavy action-comedy is simply too unremarkable to generate much of a pulse. Co-stars Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds are not without their charms, but director Robert Schwentke (RED) has made a film that culls together marketable elements without ever really getting them to congeal into anything satisfying. RATING: 2

The Frozen Ground

Scott Walker's The Frozen Ground (US, 2013) - A bleak and deliberately dour police procedural that follows the real-life events surrounding Alaska’s most notorious serial killer Robert Hansen, a family man who over a period of some 12 years abducted and killed at least 24 women in the 1970s and ‘80s, the impressively staged The Frozen Ground is a striking platform for strong, intense and serious performances from Nicolas Cage (as determined cop) and John Cusack (as manipulative killer). While straight-forward in tone and structure, the film is admirably non-exploitative as it lays out the developing drama.

Viggo Mortensen’s trademark quiet strength and enigmatic stillness works to impressive effect in Ana Piterbarg’s moody and evocative drama Everybody Has A Plan (Todos Tenemos Un Plan), largely set against backdrop of Argentina’s tough and isolated the Tigre Delta, a labyrinthine tangle of islands and waterways which has its own codes and sense of justice.

Byzantium

Neil Jordan's Byzantium stars Saoirse Ronan and Gemma Arterton in artsy but toothless vampire tale with feminist twist. 2012TOR, 2013SANF, 2013SEA, 2013TRI. **
A lush and atmospheric vampire tale that may be short on fangs but rich in moody menace, Neil Jordan’s latest delve into gothic genre drama – after Interview With The Vampire 17 years ago – provides a fine platform for striking performances from Saoirse Ronan and Gemma Arterton, though may lack the sheer gore quota to draw in horror fans.

The Circus

Charles Chaplin's The Circus (US, 1928) - 1929AA, 1981TEL, 2005SEA, 2006PALM, EGM, TAS - RATING: - Charlie Chaplin once again dons the tattered threads of his iconic alter ego in this underrated effort. Desperate to elude the police who have mistaken him for a notorious pickpocket, the bumbling vagabond joins the ranks of a traveling circus. While posing as a big top performer, the Tramp falls head over heels for an equestrienne (Merna Kennedy) who just so happens to be the daughter of the circus's no-nonsense ringmaster (Al Ernest Garcia).

This Is The End

Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen's This Is The End (US, 2013) - RATING: 3 - Fleshing out their unreleased 2007 short film Jay and Seth vs. The Apocalypse, multi-hyphenate Seth Rogen and co-producer Jay Baruchel delve into end times with the winning, unabashedly vulgar This Is the End, in which a bunch of comedic Hollywood actors, playing themselves, cope with panic and paranoia while Armageddon unfolds outside around them.

Cockneys Vs Zombies

Matthias Hoene's Cockneys vs Zombies (UK, 2012) - 2013SEA - RATING: 2 - When East London is overrun with zombies, a pair of bank robber brothers hole up in their father’s retirement community in this riotous splatter comedy. Like any high-concept movie of this variety – from Strippers vs Werewolves to Cowboys & Aliens – the title tends to give away pretty much the entire movie, but at least Cockneys vs Zombies is blessed with enough self-aware humour and some smart cameo performances to set it apart from the usual pack of low-budget British horror fare.

Tracked

Hideo Gosha's Tracked (Japan, 1985) - 1986JAA - RATING: 3 - When a fugitive begins a romance with the woman hiding him from the law, it becomes uncertain whether he will ever escape the shadow of his heinous crimes--or the detectives hot on his trail.

No Rest For The Wicked

Enrique Urbizu's No Rest For The Wicked (Spain, 2012) - 2012SANSic - RATING: 3.5 - Film noir and contempo Spain make a near-perfect match in the explosive “No Rest for the Wicked,” the kind of movie that gives dramas about bad cops a good name. Featuring a grippingly visceral central perf by Jose Coronado as a policeman who makes a big mistake at the outset and spends the remainder of the film paying for it, pic is credible, fast-moving, hard-nosed fare, confirming helmer Enrique Urbizu’s reputation as one of Spain’s sharper genre helmers. Spanish crix and auds have warmed to “Wicked,” with offshore play a possibility for fans of upscale thrillers.

On The Job

Erik Matti's On The Job (Philippines, 2013) - 2013CANdf - RATING: 3.5 - On The Job is about the ambitions and passions of four men trying to make a living, for themselves and their families. It shows the parallels between two prison inmates who are contract killers, and the two agents of the law investigating the murders. As they get caught in a web of machination of corrupt government officials, their jobs lead them on a head-on collision against each other with their loved ones as collateral damage.

Man Of Steel

Zack Snyder's Man of Steel (US, 2013) - RATING: 3.5 - An unapologetically supersized reboot of the Superman franchise, Man Of Steel doesn’t lack for spectacle, but after a while its emphasis on grand gestures and unwavering gravitas stops feeling heroic and begins to seem like overkill. Director Zack Snyder has fashioned a brawny, science-fiction-heavy action movie that’s far removed from the charming, understated tone of the original Christopher Reeve films of 30 years ago, and the boldness of that vision — aided by a quietly compelling turn from Henry Cavill — has its merits. But despite being intermittently gloriously thrilling, Man Of Steelstruggles to juggle all its many ambitions and plot strands, resulting in a film that never quite soars like a bird or a plane.

2013 Top Bollywood Films

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Race 2, Aashiqui 2, Special 26, Shootout at Wadala
1. YJHD topping this list is no surprise with the extensive marketing and pre release promotions undertaken by the production house. Though the much talked about lead couple, Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone already added horse power to the buzz around the film, the publicity and promotions have gotten the film smashing records on its very first weekend. Madhuri Dixit's much talked about dance number and the top charting music of the film did the rest.
2.  Race 2 - Critics may have slammed this film, but the BO collections proved it to be a super hit. Who more than the star studded cast and the much hyped promotions can be credited for the same!
3. Aashiqui 2 -  Aashiqui was a blockbuster back in the 90's. Could it's sequel repeat the magic that too with newcomer leads in Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor, when the Bhatt camp was not getting their cards right? It certainly did and made the two the new heartthrobs in town. The music and promotions worked wonders, made the film a BO success.
4. Special 26 - A well conceptualized and executed film with smart and intense promotions. You could not miss the mention of Special 26 around you. Add to it a real incident based story, Akshay Kumar's debut as a singer and the next film by the Wednesday director, Neeraj Pandey. Special 26 got their plan right on the target.
5. Shootout at Wadala -  Three item numbers, the firsts of Priyanka Chopra and sunny Leone, and another sizzling one by the super hot Sophie Choudry. The much spiced up dialogues and action. And a love making scene to spice up this gangster saga with extensive promotions. There was nothing that could stop SAW from stealing the BO show.

After Earth

M, Night Shyamalan's After Earth (US, 2013) - RATING: 2 - An intriguing but decidedly underwhelming mixture of genres, tones and sensibilities, After Earth has the benefit of being one of this summer’s crop of aspiring blockbusters that isn’t a sequel, prequel, reboot or based on existing material. But that supposed originality doesn’t mean much when the execution is this scattershot, as director M. Night Shyamalan and stars Jaden Smith and Will Smith deliver a trite sci-fi adventure that’s probably too intense for younger viewers and not sophisticated enough for adults. (SCREEN)

Miele

Valeria Golino's Miele (Italy, 2013) - 2013CANucr - RT:100 - RATING: 3 - Jasmine Trinca of The Best Of Youth fame, gives another outstanding performance as administer of mercy killing in Valeria Golino's fine directorial debut. As the time progress, her character starts to questioning her stance on the right to die issue and this is where the film successfully argue that there is no clear black or white line in this issue.

The Interval

Leonardo Di Costanzo's The Interval (Italy, 2012) - 2012TOR, 2012VENh, 2013NDNF - RT:90 - RATING: 2.5 - NOTES: A young man work for the mafia befriend his captor, a young woman barely his junior, after both of them spend the whole day locked in abandoned building. - A boy and a girl are locked in an enormous abandoned building in a rundown area. She is a prisoner and the local clan leader has forced him to be her warder. Despite their youth, both of them have grown up too fast. Veronica acts like a mature and open-minded woman whilst Salvatore is like a man who wants to hold on to his job and lead a quiet life. Thus, when faced with the violence of this incarceration, the two young people have different reactions: Veronica is restless and rebellious; Salvatore is more remissive and accommodating, either out of fear or realism. They are both victims but it is almost as though each blames the other for their reclusion. However, as the hours go by, their mutual hostility is transformed into an inevitable intimacy, consisting of reciprocal discoveries and confessions. Between the walls of that isolated and frightening place, Veronica and Salvatore find a way to rekindle those adolescent dreams and ideas put aside too soon. Thus the two of them enjoy a break from their prematurely adult lives and in the end are tempted to transform their imaginary escape into a real one before the gang presents Veronica with its verdict.

The Summer of Flying Fish

Marcela Said's The Summer of Flying Fish (Chile, 2013) - 2013CANdf - RATING: 3 - Using flare tension between white land owners and Mapuche tribes in Chile as a backdrop of coming of age story, The Summer of Flying Fish become the first scripted drama from Chilean docu filmmaker Marcela Said. - In “The Summer of Flying Fish,” Chilean docu director Marcela Said makes a subtle shift into scripted drama, shaping scenes of tension between white landowners and the local Mapuche natives so as to seem unrehearsed. Said’s technique blends flashes of melodrama with such naturalistic choices as shooting on location and working mostly with non-actors, resulting in a challenging fiction/nonfiction hybrid that’s stylistically neither fish nor fowl. From a festival programmer’s perspective, “Summer” is a dream offering: a refined, politically conscious film by a female director that reveals a seldom-seen social dynamic. In commercial spheres, however, it should be a much harder sell.

The Rendezvous of Deja Vu

Antonin Peretjatko's The Rendezvous of Deja Vu (France, 2013) - 2013CANdf - RATING: 2 - A road movie meet sex farce genre in a not so funny French comedy that critique harshly on French culture and establishment.- Hector meets Truquette on Bastille Day and becomes obsessed with seducing her. The plan is to get her to the seaside pronto. Pator is not complaining, especially if her friend Charlotte comes along for the ride. So off they go, down the country roads of a broke and broken France. Times are hard ! Suddenly the government cancels a month of summer. Everyone back to work ! A wad of cash and two gun shots later, the group splits in two like France itself. Renoir

Gilles Bourdos' Renoir (France, 2012) - 2012CANucr, 2013PALM - RATING: 3 - Biographical story about August Renoir, the painter, relationship with his offsprings  especially the filmmaker Jean Renoir in early nineteenth century France. - The bright Summer sunlight of the Cote d’Azur cast a golden glow over Renoir, greatly enhancing the appeal of an impeccably crafted, tenderly felt traditional period piece. Dramatising a defining moment in the lives of Pierre-August Renoir and his young son Jean, the film offers a tasteful, sensitively handled production that should readily appeal to an older demographic and to the arthouse audience who have supported similar works down the years from Camille Claudel to Seraphine.

Behind The Candelabra

Steven Soderbergh's Behind The Candelabra (US, 2013) - 2013CANic - RATING: 3.5 - Surprisingly touching and honest look at gay love as it evolve through out the years. Michael Douglas and Matt Damon give an outstanding performances as the true life couple.- Beneath the flamboyant furs, twinkling rhinestones and bitchy asides, Behind The Candelabra emerges as a touching gay love story from an age when nobody in American showbusiness would have dared to venture out of the closet. Director Steven Soderbergh and screenwriter Richard LaGravenese tread lightly on the social significance of events, focusing largely on the personal heartache in the bittersweet relationship between entertainer Liberace and his lover Scott Thorson.

The Hangover Part III

Todd Philips' The Hangover Part 3 (US, 2013) - RATING: 3 - It is not the epic conclusion that Warner Bros hoping for the very profitable series, BUT it is quiet entertaining in many levels. - As much a thriller as a comedy, The Hangover Part III brings Todd Phillips’ R-rated guys-night-out trilogy to an oddly subdued, sometimes downright dark conclusion. Loyal fans of the series, and of outrageous comedy in general, will probably still buy in, if only for a sense of closure. But even with a couple of new additions to its returning core cast Part III could be a tricky sell to casual moviegoers looking simply for good-time action and broad laughs.
